A few posts ago

when discussing one of our current projects

we speculated

about how we would deal

with some ‘over focal’ focal points

which took the form of three very splendid cypresses in a tight triangle.

Catch the link to that post here:

Focus hocus-pocus!

Aside from the 3 existing cypresses there are already some other substantial elements of a mediterranean (using the word loosely to express climate rather than geography!!) landscape:

Rosemarys, Santolinas, Agapanths, Bearded Irises, Sages etc etc .

A sunny location, free draining soil and substantial limestone boulders and ledges also suggest a dryish landscape.

So it makes sense from a client costs perspective to build on the mediterranean aspect.

It is also sound garden design sense. It being the designers maxim to go with the aspect and soils and also capitalize where at all possible on what is also useful in the existing landscape.

So what are we doing about the oh so focal cypresses?

Well working on the ‘saving’ strategy and the  ’theme’ strategy again we have decided to play the numbers game and add some more in other parts of this large rock garden.

It will be like a Tuscan hilltop. Think Monte Oliveto without the monastery!

Yes more of the same will make these 3 less prominent.

There is in short safety in numbers!

So here they are:

Shipped in at vast expense from one of our Italian suppliers.

Bred hard and lean in Tuscan nurseries, they will find their South west UK location a complete doddle.

We should not forget that Tuscany can get quite cold in the winter.

As for the rest?

We have detailed a comprehensive plant list which we will source from two regular local suppliers.

Cistus, Artichokes, Lavender, Nepeta, Perovskia, Artemisia and some pale pink roses etc.

These with loads of rosemary, ballota and thyme will quickly meld into a glisteningly silver landscape.

Here the 7 new cypresses, as yet 2 metre dwarves, will feel happy enough to soar like the existing 3 giants.

  1. Great solution to dilute the existing focal point by replicating it! Your project sounds delightful. Other than the cypresses and rosemary, this garden would be at home here in Colorado, USA as well!

    Hi Jocelyn,
Thanks so much for your comment. Pleased another professional agrees with our approach. Apparently they arrived today. I look forward to next site visit to position. And in fact for the look of the thing I just can’t wait for the summer!
