Gone Native!

Me, I am loving the open borders that now exist in Europe.

An influx of some enterprising people from the former Eastern Bloc

has reopened doors to good service

and replaced some rather surly and grudging British behaviour

with the concept of ‘service with a smile’.

What is it that we Brits do not get about this? It is as tho we think it all ever so slightly (or even hugely!!) ‘infra dig’.

Eating out the other day, the charming polish girl who brought our food not only smiled a lot, she told us what the weather would be in ‘her country’ .

(She has therefore already mastered the great British obsession!).

but she also didn’t forget the intricacies of our order. Look out Brits and up your game!

However, not all Eastern bloc immigration is an unmixed blessing. There are some who mayn’t be so welcome as we might initially think, And could get a bit big for their boots given time.

Sounds political doesn’t it? Rest assured I’m just talking plants.

Tho of course to some in blogland they might also be considered political too! I am thinking of the recent, fairly vigorous discussion on the merits and de-merits of native and non native meadows!

Crocus tommasinianus, or Crocus ‘Tommie’ to its familiars, comes from Yugoslavia, Hungary and Bulgaria, but we are familiar with it over here. You see it extolled on blogs. I have probably even blogged pics of it myself.

And then the other day I saw a garden whose borders and lawns were shaggy with it:

Where it had seeded over the garden wall into the streetside verge:

Crossed the footpath:

And was legging it down the road!

Familiar? Yes!

Over familiar? Possibly!

And it set me thinking…………..

Interesting take on E European vs. British manners, plants, etc! Many I know in the US enjoy Canadians so much, since they seem to combine the manners, sophistication of the UK with the laid-back, friendly warmth of some parts of the Americas. And I think there is no better humor than that of the English and Native Americans!

    Good service – so important!

    Hi David,
Personally I think lots of brits need to up their game on the hard working /service front.
I am finding contractors saying that now.
But what is nice is also not to have the kind of truculence/can’t be bothered attitude which young brits seem to think is cool, but isn’t.
But I can do without the shagginess that Crocus ‘Tommie’ gives to things!
Thanks so much for your comment.
