An Arts And Crafts Restoration
Working on listed landscapes is always a thrill for any garden designer, and to be given the opportunity to produce a planting plan for this Grade 2 listed Arts and Crafts garden, set like a gem within a larger Victorian landscape, was one we undertook with great enthusiasm.
While it exudes Italianate formality the space has irregular boundaries and long narrow borders. As the existing planting was rather lacklustre and incoherent, our brief was to completely replant and enliven with successional bursts of seasonal colour.
Responding to both the brief and the site we used a limited palette of plants, often deep pink and gold, which was repeated around the space. Structural verticals of columnar golden yews and bold pots of boxwood balls around the pool will help to pull the space together.
The ‘golden afternoon’ of this garden now glows again!
