A Fisherman’s Cottage

A maritime theme has been adopted for this 18th century fisherman’s cottage garden located close to a busy quayside in Wells, North Norfolk.

A wave-like curve forms the edge of an area of decking creating a comfortable dining space in a sheltered location at the top of the garden. Planting of Norfolk lavender, which is mirrored further down the garden, follows the curve of the decking and represents another strong feature of the local landscape.

Between the waves of lavender a small gravel garden is reminiscent of shingle beaches nearby, and planting has been left deliberately sparse to allow room for family dogs to play.

Use of red brick and flint for the small retaining wall creates a feeling of unity and harmony with the cottage and surrounding area.

Any planting in this low maintenance garden has to be tough and includes a variety of herbs, grasses and other drought-tolerant plants, as well as a small fernery in the shady spot at the bottom of the garden.
